SAD! Shelby Slawson Bans Herself from Texas Schools

Texas Republicans recently passed a bizarre education reform bill into law which mandates that kids learn about how “white supremacy” is “morally wrong.”

What’s even stranger is these Republicans are telling voters that their White Supremacy Awareness Act actually bans teaching Critical Race Theory.

After you get past the part where the new law bravely mandates you can’t test* on the 1619 Project, a revisionist history propaganda piece based on Critical Race Theory, you will find a bunch of random concepts that will be banned from classrooms.

None of these concepts have anything to do with Critical Race Theory, they don’t seem to be connected to anything, actually, except being weird.

Note the highlighted parts.

(4) a teacher, administrator, or other employee of a state agency, school district, or open-enrollment charter school may not:

(A) be required to engage in training, orientation, or therapy that presents any form of race or sex stereotyping or blame on the basis of race or sex;

(B) require or make part of a course the concept that:

(i) one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex;

(ii) an individual, by virtue of the individual's race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously;

(iii) an individual should be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment solely or partly because of the individual's race;

(iv) members of one race or sex cannot and should not attempt to treat others without respect to race or sex;

(v) an individual's moral character, standing, or worth is necessarily determined by the individual's race or sex;

(vi) an individual, by virtue of the individual's race or sex, bears responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex;

(vii) an individual should feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of the individual's race or sex;

Ostensibly what we have here is a law that (poorly) seeks to ban identity politics that seems to project blame or credit towards any individual within the critical theory of identities framework. That’s not how CRT works in academic settings, but whatever.

A strict interpretation of this law would mean that, at the very least, teachers would be prohibited from showing Shelby’s post in schools. Teachers would also have to add qualifiers and insert opposing views if they were to talk about a figure who’s constantly promoting critical theories of identity to influence current events. So if this law made sense (ha) you would expect Shelby and other such figures wouldn’t be worth the trouble.
